Picture this: sipping your morning coffee on a quaint deck, serenaded by the lively clucks of the Chick-Inn’s resident chickens. As the sun sets, you’re gathered around the campfire with loved ones, sharing laughter and stories under a sky that seems to stretch forever. This isn't a scene out of a holiday Hallmark movie—it's right here in Texas at the Wrenwood Ranch.
Founded by Keisha and Chad Watkins, a couple whose backgrounds in public service have shaped their dedication in hospitality. "I've worked as a registered nurse at the bedside since 2003 and still work two 12-hour shifts weekly at a local hospital in Fredericksburg," Keisha shared. "Chad, my husband, was a Highway Patrol officer before diving into this dream full-time. He now builds and manages the property."
Watkins says they didn’t want Wrenwood Ranch to be just a vacation destination. They wanted it to feel like a home away from home. Tucked in the heart of Texas, their cozy cottages offer the perfect setting for holiday reunions, romantic escapes, or solo soul-searching trips.
"When we got married in 2011, we rented a property with multiple homes, cottages, and a large villa. Sixty of our friends and family stayed with us the entire weekend, giving us more time to reminisce and create unforgettable memories. That experience inspired us to create something similar someday."
Fast forward to today, and Wrenwood Ranch boasts seven cottages, each designed with thoughtful detail. "Four feature full kitchens, while three are simpler, like hotel setups. One cottage has two bedrooms and a walk-in shower for those with limited mobility. Three cottages have step-free entrances, and five of the seven are pet-friendly," she explained.
But the journey to bring this dream to life wasn’t without challenges.
"We bought 14 acres in May 2020 and moved into a 200 sq. ft. travel trailer without power, septic, or water," Watkins recalled. "With a chainsaw, long days, and occasional rented equipment, we cleared the land and started building our dream. Nearly everything—98%—has been done by Chad and me, with occasional help from family and friends. In 2024, we began constructing a 4,500 sq. ft. event space ourselves. Our goal is to have it completed by April 2025 for our daughter’s wedding, making her the first to enjoy the space."
What makes Wrenwood Ranch truly unique, however, is the love and labor poured into every corner. "Every single item on this property has been built, created, and cared for by us. It’s a dream come to life, filled with peace and thoughtfulness for our guests. We still clean every cottage, do every load of laundry, cut all the grass, and build this venue ourselves. This is what it takes to achieve a goal," she said.
The Watkins’ hard work is a testament to their belief in the power of perseverance. "Dreams can become reality. Be flexible, work hard, sacrifice for what you want, and go for it," Watkins advised. "Your vision and why must be strong enough to keep you going when you feel like giving up. Gratitude for the ability to do hard things, use your physical body, and grow mentally through mentors and personal development is a gift."
